What should be included in a sports coaching session?
Whether you are studying sports coaching qualifications or an experienced coach, it is always useful to appropriately plan your coaching sessions. All coaches should be included the following in all sports coaching sessions:
- Previous content
- Warm up
- Main content
- Cool down
- Health and Safety
The first part should be the date and time of your coaching session. This will remind you of when you are due to lead the session, it will also be useful when you look back over your plans and keep a record on the development of your athletes/players.
This should be what you will focus on in the session and what you want you to achieve by the end of the session.
This information can be used to help determine the next logical progression from your previous sessions. To progress, you want to gradually build on prior coaching sessions and including this will help remind you to do so. Some coaches also use matchday planners to help evaluate games to determine future coaching sessions.
It is very easy to forget what you have planned for the warm up therefore including this will enable you to begin your session with an engaging and effective start. Different sports require different warm up techniques/methods and including this can support you with your session’s pace. Sports coaching books can provide more support and guidance in this.
Here is where you will use your coaching skills to embed and develop your athletes. Ensuring your plan builds on each practice will help your athletes to develop the necessary skills. Aim to make this gradually more difficult and use your national governing bodies guidance to ensure you are using appropriate drills safely.
It is very easy not to include this in your plan, and there are several benefits of a cool down. Hence, why this is included in the sports coaching session templates.
When planning your coaching session, it is useful to consider how you can adapt any practices to suit all and this is where differentiation comes in.
Health and safety
This is included in the plans to ensure that coaches remind themselves of any health and safety needs and protect athletes and third parties from any injury.
